Laura Lähteenmäen lastenromaaniuutuus Marenkikeiju (WSOY) on liikuttava kirja. Ulpu rakastaa ruokaa. Hänen hurjaa ruokahaluaan ja nautinnonhakuista herkutteluaan yrittävät hillitä niin koulun terkkari kuin äiti ja isä. Terkkarin näkeminenkin saa hänet kiusaantumaan. Mutta minkäs teet, kun äiti on pitopalvelualalla ja kaupasta voi hakea kassillisen ruokaa tilille!

Ulpun haaveet ystävistä ovat aitoja ja kipeitä - ruokakeskeinen elämä onkin pohjimmiltaan noidankehä: pulskan tytön lohtusyöpöttelyä. Ulpun näkemät värit ja asiat ja hänen keksimänsä vertauksetkin liittyvät kaikki ruokaan. Surkuhupaisaa kyllä, Ulpu ihailee tanssijoita ja ilmoittautuu itsekin tanssikurssille, missä elämän realiteetit lyövät häntä railakkaasti poskelle. Isoveljen tyttöystävä on hänen idolinsa, mutta siltäkin suunnalta maa pettää jalkojen alta.

Pidin kirjan rauhallisesta kerronnasta ja sävykkäästä tyylistä. Tytön vähän lapselliset unelmat kietoutuvat arjen vastoinkäymisiin. Yksityisissä ruokamaailmoissaan hän on hetkittäin kai onnellinenkin, mutta jo kirjan alkupuolella lukija alkaa kiihkeästi toivoa: Voi, kunpa Ulpu tosiaan ystävystyisi jonkun kanssa ja saisin ruoan lisäksi muutakin sisältöä elämäänsä!

Nykylapset elävät jatkuvien ruokaan ja syömisiin liittyvien houkutusten keskellä, ja epäonnistunut painonhallinta lisää epäonnistumisen kokemuksia muillakin elämänalueilla, varsinkin ihmissuhteissa. Mutta korostetaanko lapsille jo vähän liikaakin alituista syömisten tarkkailua ja suorastaan laihtumista (kun ei kaikkia kuitenkaan saada ahdettua siihen samaan muottiin) ja liittyykö syömiseen aina syyllisyys?

Vietin pari viikkoa sitten tunnin lukemalla kirjaa ja yrittämällä päättää, onko se lasten-vai nuortenkirja...

Aihe oli minusta nuorten, käsittelytapa lasten. Aikuisena lukiessa kirja kosketti syvältä - lukijakuntaa on kuitenkin vaikea määritellä.
